Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) clinched the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 title with a dominant performance against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. KKR’s bowlers restricted SRH to a paltry 113, the lowest score in IPL final history, before Venkatesh Iyer’s unbeaten half-century sealed the win in just 10.3 overs.
Following KKR’s victory, former India batter Ambati Rayudu, in his congratulatory message to the Shreyas Iyer-led side, took a veiled dig at Virat Kohli and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). Speaking to Star Sports after the match, Rayudu emphasized the importance of team effort over individual accolades.
“Congratulations to the KKR team for really standing up for stalwarts like (Sunil) Narine, (Andre) Russell and (Mitchell) Starc and also contribute their share in the team’s win. That’s how a team wins the IPL. We have seen this over the years. It’s not the Orange Cap that wins you the IPL but it is the contributions like 300 runs each (of many players),” Rayudu said.
Kohli, who was in exceptional form this season, won the Orange Cap for scoring the most runs in the tournament. He amassed 741 runs in 15 innings at an average of 61.75, including one century and five fifties, at a strike rate of over 154. This marked the second time Kohli won the Orange Cap, the first being in 2016 when he scored a record 973 runs.
Rayudu’s comments echoed similar sentiments he expressed after Chennai Super Kings‘ (CSK) elimination from IPL 2024. Following CSK’s loss to Rajasthan Royals in the Eliminator, Rayudu had remarked on RCB’s struggles to convert individual brilliance into team success.
