ACB suspends Mohammad Shahzad for indefinite period

The Afghanistan wicketkeeper Mohammad Shahzad has been suspended by the concerned board for an indefinite period following a further breach of the ACB Code of Conduct.

The story

Mohammad Shahzad has received the punishment for travelling out of the country without seeking the permission of the governing board. An official statement from Afghanistan cricket board explained how Shahzad violated the policy by travelling out of the country without permission. “As per ACB’s policies, any player travelling out of the country is required to seek the permission of ACB. Shahzad has not adhered to this, repetitively.”

Mohammad Shahzad who is the country’s all-time top scorer at the international level with six ODI centuries to his name was earlier found to have breached contract during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 in England and Wales as well. Following the same, he was withdrawn from the squad and sent home from the tournament having played just matches following a ‘disciplinary matter’. Reported he did not even appear for the meeting in connection to his omission scheduled with the Discipline Committee on 20th and 25th July according to the official statement of the board published on their website.

The decision to take time

This suspension means that Afghanistan team have to prepare for a one-off Test against Bangladesh on September 9 without Shahzad. Then they will be playing a Twenty 20 tri-series with Zimbabwe and Bangladesh later in the month. The board has informed, “The Discipline Committee will meet after Eid-ul Adha holidays to assess the breaches by Mohammad Shahzad and make a decision to be publicized soon.”

The cricket board has also mentioned that ACB is enough equipped and capable of delivering all the facilities to the cricketers. “ACB has well-equipped training and practice facilities within the country and Afghan players do not require to travel abroad for such purposes”, the media release read.
