After David Raya took Aaron Ramsdale’s spot in the starting lineup, the England goalkeeper left Arsenal on Friday to join Southampton, a Premier League squad. On the last day of the summer transfer window, Ramsdale is said to have gone for an initial 18 million pounds ($23.7 million) and a four-year contract. Ramsdale was selected for the Premier League team of the year two seasons prior, but after Raya was signed, he was left off of Arsenal’s roster the following season.
Ramsdale decision of joining Southampton
Ramsdale, who did not participate in any games while representing England at the last European Championship, was scheduled to serve as Raya’s deputy for another season. However, he has opted to take on a challenging role at a team that is anticipated to be fighting for relegation following promotion. Referring to his experience at neighboring Bournemouth, Ramsdale remarked, “Coming back down to the south coast as well for me and my family, it would be an easier transition than most, so I feel like I can hit the ground running.”
“Just getting back to what I do best and having a big smile on my face while doing it here is what I’m looking forward to this year.” With Ramsdale earning five caps, Southampton manager Russell Martin called the signing of an England international a “statement signing.” Martin expressed his gratitude to the board and ownership for making it possible, pointing out that many other teams were eager to sign him. “Aaron is obviously a very talented goalkeeper, but also an impressive all-round football player, which is clearly important for us with the way we play.” Martin said.
Ramsdale felt welcomed in Southampton
After joining the Gunners from Sheffield United in 2021, the England international was the team’s first option in goal, but David Raya took his spot the previous campaign. Since then, Raya has finalized his permanent transfer to the Gunners and established himself as the team’s top player after winning the Premier League’s Golden Glove title the previous season.Ramsdale moved away as a result of being able to play in just 11 contests overall.
He declared, “I’m overjoyed. The manager seemed very excited to play, and that was evident in the way he behaved when I spoke with him. He made me feel like I was eight feet tall, which is exactly how you should feel even though I had never met him before.” “Just getting back to what I do best and having a big smile on my face while doing it here is what I’m looking forward to this year.”
The 26-year-old cost Saints £18 million up front, with an additional £1 million if they are able to avoid relegation. If the requirements for further add-ons are satisfied, the transaction might increase to as much as £25 million. Arsenal is set to pursue Neto of Bournemouth as a replacement after their attempt to sign highly-regarded goalkeeper Joan Garcia of Espanyol was unsuccessful.
